Just Starting in Minor Hockey?

Welcome parents!

Here is a quick rundown of what a hockey season will mean for your child (and your family).

Under 7 (U7) Exhibition games and tournaments start after December 1 each year using mini nets.

Hockey Sask as a excellent resources for Getting Started as well as a run down of the U7 Games and Practices. Check it out!

Unity Minor Hockey will provide a practice jersey for U7 in specific colours based on level of skill and will be broken into groups to enhance their development, after that, it is expected the child purchase their own practice jersey.

Power Skating Equipment Requirements

CSA approved hockey helmet with cage

Neck Guard

Elbow pads

Hockey gloves

Shin guards

Skates

Left handed or Right handed hockey stick cut to appropriate size

**Failure to wear the mandatory equipment will result with your player being sent off the ice until all equipment is being worn.**

Cross Ice

Examples of cross ice set up as per Hockey Sask

Basic Rules:

  • Games can be played 5-on-5 or 4-on-4 or 3-on-3 depending on the number of players.
  • Each game will be played with a Blue 4oz puck.
  • Mini nets are recommended, but regular ones are accepted.

Game Length:

  • Warmup for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • For a 60-minute ice allocation; play two (2) twenty-five (25) minute straight time periods.
  • For a 75-minute ice allocation; play two (2) thirty-minute (30) straight time periods.

Shifts:

  • Clock is run continuously and shifts are 3 minutes, however the clock can be stopped after each two-minute shift change, then start the clock when the puck is dropped for the next shift.
  • Player benches, penalty boxes or neutral zone may be used for players not in play. Please also consider using the different skill zones if only one game is being played.

Faceoffs

  • Start of each shift.
  • There will be NO face-offs after a goal is scored. In this instance, the ref or coach will place the puck behind the net or in the corner and the team that got scored can bring the puck up the ice while the team that scored goes back to their net.
  • Frozen pucks or pucks out of play will see the officials blow the whistle, back the attacking team off to half and put the puck beside the net to resume play.

Interested in Coaching?

Minor Hockey is run by volunteers. Coaches, assistant coaches, bench staff, and managers all put in alot of time to ensure your child learns the game while having fun. We need all parents to volunteer throughout the season to ensure the success of the season. This can include but not limited to, setting up and taking down the bumpers or boards, working the score clock or score sheet, getting hot chocolate for the referees, and assisting with the home tournament, such as selling prize table tickets, puck toss pucks, etc.
